It is administrative Indian civil service. Civil services of India are categorized into three main categories namely: Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Forest Service (IFS). An IAS officer can be given a key position and responsibility in central government, state government and public sector undertaking companies. Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) looks after the recruitment process of civil services. The candidate will have to successfully go through the three phases of selection process namely preliminary exam, main exam and interview round. General category student can give maximum 4 attempts, OBC category candidate can apply for maximum 7 attempts while there is no restrictions on number of attempts to a SC/ST category candidate. Upper age limit for SC/ST candidate is maximum 35 years while to a general category candidate it has been set to 30 years. It is mandatory for state governments to consult Union government before taking any disciplinary action against an IAS officer. An IAS officer receive high prestige in Indian society.
